The November Rule

Here at MIT, the date is significant for a different reason its the day that the November Rule technically expires. What is the November Rule? Its the unspoken rule we have on campus that freshman-upperclassman relationships are strictly forbidden until November 1st. While this mostly applies to upperclassmen as a warning not to mack on the frosh, Newtons Third Law dictates that it applies to the frosh as well. An important note: the rule does not apply to freshman-freshman relationships, but Ill give my opinion on that later. Why is this a thing? The Tech has their take, and I agree with pretty much everything in this article, but Ill say my spiel anyways. Freshman fall is kind of a shitshow. In the course of a few weeks, you have to learn how to deal with classes (which are suddenly very difficult and nothing at all like that easy shit in high school), how to balance extracurriculars, studying, and life, and make at least one good group of friends. This is not easy. Peoples experiences with freshman fall lie on the scale of it was a little rough to adjust to to it was a nuclear disaster, and anybody not on that scale is lying. In the midst of this shitshow, the last thing you need to be doing is getting into a relationship of any sort. Your self-esteem is already being tested the classes are hard and suddenly youre getting Bs and Cs and even failing tests, and you feel like youre stupid and you dont belong here. The last thing you need is to get into a relationship and go through a bad breakup and feel even shittier. You might not even know that its possible to feel even shittier, but it is. Plus, no matter what type of relationship you have on the spectrum from just hooking up to full blown monogamy itll take up a non-trivial amount of your time, and possibly occupy a non-trivial amount of your emotional capacity, neither of which are in great abundance during freshman fall. Granted, youll probably have more free time during freshman fall than in any other semester, but the importance of managing your time well cannot be understated, and freshman fall is the time to learn how to do that. It is not the time to be worrying if somebody wants to hook up with you or not. That can come when you have your shit marginally figured out. As an associate advisor for freshmen, one of the biggest reasons that most of us give re. holding off on relationships during the first few months at MIT is the harm it could inflict on other budding social groups. Say you get into a relationship, and as is common in relationships, you spend a lot of time together and neglect other social groups that you might be forming. Now say that you break up, and  suddenly find that you dont have a group of friends, and most friend groups have already stabilized and its hard to work your way in. This is obviously a fairly bad scenario, and if youre reasonable about relationships, then this wont happen. But most of us here have seen it happen, and thats why we always give this example as fair warning. Notice that I didnt specifically call out freshman-upperclassman relationships. Im calling out all relationships, including freshman-freshman ones, because I think what I said above holds true in both cases. But the November Rule specifically targets freshman-upperclassman relationships, and thats because of the power dynamic. There are a lot of opinions on whether there actually is a power dynamic between upperclassmen and freshmen. I saw a recent MIT Confession that argued that there isnt really, since most of the power upperclassmen have is from being experienced and wise denizens of MIT, when in reality most upperclassmen arent, or at least dont feel that way. I personally believe that this is untrue. I can attest to the fact that I definitely dont  feel  like I have any idea of whats going on at MIT, but the fact is that I do. Ive had an entire year here. Whether I realize it or not, I now know a lot of things that I definitely didnt know freshman fall. Some examples: Starting a pset the night before its due will not end well Though it might have worked in high school, staying up late every day fooling around and sleeping 4 hours a night is not a sustainable lifestyle Doing All The Extracurriculars That Seem Cool is also unsustainable you have to eventually pick and choose Failing a test is okay and is not the end of the world (I remember getting a fifth week flag in 5.111 and feeling like my world was in fact ending but this is okay, I passed and lived to tell the tale) I strongly believe that my duty as an upperclassman is to help freshmen work through all these issues and realize where their boundaries are. Once they can stand on their own feet, the power dynamic is significantly diminished. But the time it takes for that to happen is set at a bare minimum of two months. That being said, there are some (creepy) upperclassmen who declare open season on the frosh starting today. I dont think that the turn of the month means that all the frosh are suddenly mature MIT students who know how to balance their time and relationships, hence the creepiness. In turn, its not that great for the frosh to suddenly start macking on all the upperclassmen theyve been crushing on. Today just signifies that a social convention has now become marginally less unacceptable. That doesnt make getting into relationships left and right starting today the best idea. There are a lot of people whose opinion on the November Rule goes something alone the lines of hang the rules, theyre more like guidelines anyways. That may be true, but I believe its a guideline with good intentions that people should follow. According to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, more than 50% of college assaults happen in the first six weeks of the fall semester. I like to think that putting a social stigma on freshman-upperclassman relationships does something to alleviate that statistic. On a lighter note: the quote I put at the top of this post is actually a line from a song from  Hack Punt Tool, an MIT original musical! This musical is about a lot of important elements of MIT culture, and one of the subplots is about the relationship between a freshman and an upperclassman. 01 They do eventually get together after going through many grueling experiences together and coming out on the other side okay - and after November, of course! Billy Pilgrims Struggle with PTSD in Vonneguts...

In order to illustrate the devastating affects of war, Kurt Vonnegut afflicted Billy Pilgrim with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which caused him to become â€Å"unstuck in time† in the novel. Billy Pilgrim illustrates many symptoms of PTSD throughout the story. Vonnegut uses these Slaughterhouse Five negative examples to illustrate the horrible and devastating examples of war. The examples from the book are parallel to real life experiences of war veterans, including Vonnegut’s, and culminate in a very effective anti-war novel. Although Kurt Vonnegut does not say in his novel that Billy Pilgrim has PTSD, it is implied by the first hand view into Pilgrim’s mind. Throughout the book we are taken on a spastic and wild journey from one moment in Pilgrim’s life to another. For instance, Pilgrim is walking through the horribly cold, bleak and depressing German landscape with â€Å"The Three Musketeers† and ends up being dragged by Weary most of the way. As soon as the two scouts ditch him and Weary and it seems their ordeal couldn’t get any worse, Pilgrim â€Å"time travels† to a moment in which he has just won the Presidency of The Lion’s Club and proceeds to gives an impressive speech. (Vonnegut 48-50). This sort of behavior, completely dissociating oneself from the horrible situation at hand, is typical of PTSD. Strong emotions and ideas Essay A comparison of To Autumn and La Belle Dame Sans Merci on how they present strong emotions and ideas  To Autumn and La Belle Dame Sans Merci are poems both written by John Keats. Both are classic examples of the genre. Both poems share emotive and passionate feelings. In to Autumn Keats describes his strong feelings about autumn. In La Belle Dame Sans Merci we see Keats express strong emotions about life and death. In this essay I plan to focus on the different emotions and ideas that Keats writes about in To Autumn and La Belle Dame Sans Merci. In To Autumn the first stanza describes the bounty, in the last the dreaminess, Keats expresses words that are so transparent and direct that reading the poem we almost forget they are words, and in fact are nature itself. Keats makes it appear as though the seasons are speaking to the reader and not him. This pensiveness and interaction with Mother Nature creates s subtle awareness of time passing and of changes taking place within nature. In La Belle Dame Sans Merci Keats presents his ideas quite differently to how he did in To Autumn. The ballad does not open with a relaxing tone; the first paragraph uncomfortably cuts off very sharply. A general comparison that one can make between the two pieces is that the contents of To Autumn are wholesome and natural whilst the contents of La Belle Dame Sans Merci is supernatural and incredibly dream like. Keats deliberately uses archaic language in To Autumn and La Belle Dame Sans Merci; this creates a more poetic effect in the two poems. In La Belle Dame Sans Merci the sonnet is so magical, supernatural and fantasy like the reader will inevitably make up their own mind about what Keats is describing. In To Autumn however the description of autumn is so clear that the reader can quickly see what Keats is describing. La Belle Dame Sans Merci the narrator appeals to feel sorry for the knight in the first stanza, the narrator shows concern in his opening line O what can ail thee. The first three stanzas of the sonnet contain many words with negative meanings ail, no birds and fever. The diction and outlook is evidently negative. The reader will probably sympathise with the knight because of this. To Autumn starts very differently. It starts with a definite positive and uplifting tone with the opening first stanza addressing Autumn, describing its abundance, its friendship with the sun, how Autumn ripens fruits and causes the late flowers to bloom. Theyre a regular occurrence in the life of any reporter, so you need to be able to cover them - and cover them well. But for the beginner, a press conference can be tough to cover. Press conferences tend to move quickly and often dont last very long, so you may have very little time to get the information you need. Another challenge for the beginning reporter is figuring out the lede of a press conference story. So here are six tips for covering press conferences. 1. Come Armed with Questions As we said, press conferences move quickly, so youll need to have your questions ready ahead of time. Arrive with some questions already prepared. And really listen to the answers. 2. Ask Your Best Questions Once the speaker starts taking questions, its often a free-for-all, with multiple reporters shouting out their queries. You may only get one or two of your questions into the mix, so pick your best ones and ask those. And be ready to ask tough follow-up questions. 3. Be Aggressive If Necessary Any time you get a bunch of reporters in one room, all asking questions at the same time, its bound to be a crazy scene. And reporters are by their nature competitive people. So when you go to a press conference, be prepared to be a bit pushy in order to get your questions answered. Shout if you need to. Push your way to the front of the room if you must. Above all, remember - only the strong survive at a press conference. 4. Forget the PR Speak - Focus On the News Corporations, politicians, sports teams and celebrities often try to use press conferences as public relations tools. Press the Speaker Dont let the speaker at a press conference get away with making broad generalizations that arent supported by facts. Question the basis for the statements they make, and get specifics. For instance, if the mayor of your town announces he plans to cut taxes while at the same time increasing municipal services, your first question should be: how can the town provide more services with less revenue? Likewise, if that CEO whose company has just lost billions says hes upbeat about the future, ask him why - how can he expect that things will get better when the company is clearly in trouble? Again, get him to be specific. 6. Dont Be Intimidated Whether youre covering a press conference with the mayor, the governor or the president, dont let yourself be intimidated by their power or stature. Thats what they want. Once youre intimidated, youll stop asking tough questions, and remember, its your job to ask tough questions of the most powerful people in our society.

Leadership During the time of change in company policy and transition from the old process of working to the new one, leaders act as catalysts of change. They are necessary member of the organization since they shoulder the strength of the company in general.Leaders have the ability to set and influence the point of view and opinions of their subordinates.
